Starting May 15, 2012, the answer to that simple question can win you four free Bancroft Press eBooks.

The contest, hosted on the Facebook page for acclaimed and award-winning Baltimore-based independent publisher Bancroft Press, will lead up to the June 1 release of The Understory, the second novel from Nevada author Elizabeth Leiknes. Her first novel, The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns, drew praise from sources as diverse as Kirkus Reviews, dozens of literary blogs, and chick lit pioneer Jane Green, who recommended it enthusiastically.

The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns is also a prize in the contest.

The Understory, set in Phoenix, Arizona, is one of the best novels weve ever published, says Bancroft editor Harrison Demchick. Its a testament to the fact that great literature doesnt just come from the big New York publishers. It can come from anywhere. And we wanted to celebrate that.

Readers who go to the Bancroft Press Facebook page on May 15 will have the opportunity to sign up for the contest. Provided there are 100 entries, one reader will win free copies of The Understory and The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns, along with two other Bancroft eBooks of their choice.

And for every 50 entries we get beyond 100, says Demchick, well give the same prize to another winner.

The Understory is about how all our stories are interconnected, says Leiknes. I think its a dark fairytale.

That fairytale seems to have resonated with early readers around the world, from author Sandi Kahn Shelton, whose Kissing Games of the World is being made into a film, to blogger Unabridged Chick, who called it an odd and charming fairytale, to an 11-year-old YouTube reviewer in New Zealand named Josiah Morgan who proclaimed it one of this top ten books ever written.

Weve never run a contest like this, says Demchick. This is a great way to start. I want people to know, definitively, that indie publishing is often where you find some of the most wonderful, daring, and exciting novels. There is nothing else out there like The Understory.
